Home Remedies for Curing Cold

A cold is a kind of infection that infects the upper respiratory tract. It is also known as acute coryza, or viral rhinopharyngitis. This infectious disease is mainly caused by rhinoviruses or coronaviruses. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), children get an average of 12 colds per year as compared with the adults and adolescents who catch about 7 colds per year.

What causes a cold?

Cold can be caused by a different type of viruses such as

  • Coronavriuses adenovirus
  • Human respiratory syncytial virus

1. Ginger

Those suffering from a cold can get relief from ginger. Ginger will be very helpful in curing cold and its symptoms because of its anti-inflammatory, expectorant, and antiviral properties. Drink ginger tea or eat raw ginger many times a day. If you want to enhance the effectiveness of ginger tea, you can add a honey and lemon juice to it. Moreover, you can make a paste of cloves, salt and ginger and eat 1/2 tsp of it two times a day. For a runny nose, you need to mix equal amounts of jiggery (a natural sweetener), clarified butter (ghee) and dry ginger powder. Take this mixture daily in the early morning on an empty abdomen.

2. Red Onion

If you are suffering from this infectious disease, you can drink red onion syrup. To make the red onion syrup, you can get red onions and brown sugar or honey to make syrup.

  1. Slice 2 to 3 onions horizontally. You need to put only one slice of red onion in a bowl and add brown sugar or raw honey. You need to repeat the process to fill the bowl.
  2. After that, you need to cover the bowl and leave it for ten to fifteen hours. When you check the bowl after ten to fifteen hours, you will get thick liquid like syrup.
  3. You can drink the red onion syrup many times a day to get rid of cold.

3. Drink lots of fluids

The American Lung Association suggests drinking approximate 8 glasses of juice or water per day when trying to power through the cold. Keep hydrated as it will help moisturize the lining of the throat and nose, which makes sputum easier to clear. You should avoid alcoholic drinks or caffeinated.

4. Give your nose a massage

 There is a research which shows that massaging an acupuncture point known as yingxiang, situated at the lower line of the nostril, can give relief from cold.

5. Honey

Honey can be of great help in shortening the lifespan of a cold and also soothing an irritated throat. The high amount of enzymes and nutrients in this remedy helps kill viruses and bacteria that cause common colds.

  • The simplest home remedy is to swallow a spoonful of raw honey.
  • You can consume a mixture of 2 tsp of honey and1 tsp of lemon juice. Drink it every 2, 3 hours to get instant relief from this infectious disease.

6. Garlic

Garlic’s antiviral and antibacterial properties will be beneficial in curing cold symptoms. It is an amazing remedy for your immune system and helps flush toxins out of your body. This is one of the best home remedies to cure a cold.

  • Mix together half a teaspoon red chilli powder or cayenne pepper, one crushed garlic clove, one teaspoon honey, and two teaspoons lemon juice. Take it daily until the symptoms wane.
  • You may use drops of garlic oil in your drinks and food.
  • You can also boil 4 to 5 chopped garlic cloves in a glass of water and add 1 tsp of honey. Drink it 2 to 3 times a day.

7. Saline nasal sprays and drops

Over-the-counter saline nasal sprays and drops combat congestion and stuffiness. In baby, professional suggest instilling various saline drops into one nostril, then smoothly suctioning the nostril with a bulb syringe. You need to squeeze the bulb, smoothly place the syringe tip in the nostril about 6 to 12 millimeters (about 1/4 to 1/2 inch) and gradually release the bulb. Saline nasal sprays can be utilized in older children.

8. Eat chicken soup

The chicken soup is very beneficial for a cold. Chief medical officer of the American Lung Association recommends that this remedy is very effective to get rid of cold as it evanishes the mucus. This remedy is known as an anti-inflammatory which inhibit the movement of neutrophils. Second, this remedy boosts the movement of mucus, helping relieve congestion and decreasing the amount of viruses are in contact with the nose.

9. Salt water

A saltwater gargle can provide relief from cold. You need to dissolve half teaspoon salt in an 8-ounce cup of warm water.  It can temporarily relieve a scratchy or sore throat.

To avoid revealing yourself to other infections and bacteria, it’s essential to check what you put in your nose. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), if you are flushing, rinsing , or irrigating your sinuses, use sterile, distilled, or previously boiled water to make up the irrigation solution. It is very essential to rinse the device of irrigation after each use and leave irrigation device open to air dry.
