It’s really uncomfortable and painful for those who suffer from this condition of the ingrown finger nails. An ingrown finger nail is developed where edge of a finger nail starts growing to the skin surrounding the nail as it grows. This results in the skin growing over the nail and is known as an ingrown fingernail. The toe nails are the ones more susceptible than the other finger nails to this condition. However it can happen in any of your nails.
But no worries now, here are a few home remedies through which you can easily get rid of the pain and trouble caused by the ingrown nails.
- Soak the Ingrown Finger Nail in Warm Water
Nothing can soothe the inflamed area of your skin better than the warm water. Take a bowl and add in it enough warm water to soak your finger or toe nail. Let your nails soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Then dry your foot or hand properly with a towel and repeat this method at least 3 to 4 times a day. Remember not to keep your finger nails wet other than when you soak them as it may lead to growth of bacteria and then further complications.
- Use A Cotton Ball To Lift Your Ingrown Finger Nail
While your finger nails grow, if you direct the growth of the nail, they might not result into such a condition and would not grow around the skin that surrounds your nails.
Take a piece of cotton ball and wedge it where the nail is ingrown under the edge of it. You can use tweezers if needed but make sure that you do not push the nail hard. Preferably it should be done after you have soaked your nails in warm water. Both your skin and the nail would be very soft and flexible just after you soak them so it would not be painful and would not create problems in lifting your nail. This method will lift your ingrown nail and will make it to grow against your skin. Do this till you are satisfied with your nail not growing into your skin.
- Soak Your Ingrown Fingernail in Vinegar Water Solution
Vinegar is one of the best home remedies for treating any kind of infections. Add 1 part of vinegar to 4 parts of water and soak your ingrown finger nail in it for about 15 to 20 minutes. Then take out your foot or hand dry it properly. Repeat this procedure at least twice or thrice per day.
- Epsom Salt Soak Treatment
Epsom salt is the best if you are no more able to bear the pain caused by this condition as it will help in reducing the pain and infection of the ingrown nail. Take 2 to 4 tablespoons of Epsom salt and add it to 4 to 6 cups of water. Soak your finger nails in it for about 20 minutes and then dry it properly using a towel. Repeat this 3 to 4 times per day.
- Using Lemon to Prevent Infection
The acid that is present in the lemon can effectively fight against any kind of infections. Take a small thin wedge of lemon and keep it over the ingrown finger nail. Take a bandage and start wrapping it around the slice of the lemon. The bandage however can also be used to keep the lemon slice in place. Leave this overnight. Not only will the nail dig inside your skin, but also will prevent any kind of infections.
- Using Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is known as the natural disinfectant and controls the growth of the bacteria and viruses. Take a cup of hydrogen peroxide and add it to half a bucket of water. Soak your hands for around 15 to 20 minutes. Doing this will not only make the skin surrounding your nail soft but will also prevent any infections from occurring and will relieve you from the pain.
- Tea Tree Oil Treatment
Tea tree oil is an essential oil which contains high amount of conditioners and it conditions your skin when any infection occurs. This oil has antibacterial plus antifungal properties which will relieve you from sufferings and pain. Take a cup of warm water and add to it 2 to 4 drops of the tea tree essential oil and soak the fingers of your hand or feet in it for around 20 minutes. Repeat this method 2 to 3 times a day and remember to dry the fingers after you are done with soaking.
Another way you can use the tea tree oil is by combining it with olive oil. Take 1 tablespoon of olive oil and add 2 to 4 drops of tea tree oil to it. Take the mixture of these two oils and massage your ingrown finger nail with it. You will notice the difference after the oil gets absorbed into your skin that how soft it makes your skin and relieves you from the unwanted pain.
How to Prevent Ingrown Fingernails
- Always wear shoes that are better fitting and not tight as tight shoes will give you ingrown toe nails.
- Make sure that you reduce the pressure on your toes by avoiding wearing open toe shoes. This will provide your toes and fingers enough space for movement.
- Avoid trimming the corner of your nails till you see them properly and clearly.
