Thyroid is a hormone secreting gland located just below the collarbone. It is an endocrinal gland and resembles the shape of a butterfly. Thyroid gland controls overall metabolism of the human body and regulates calorie burning mechanism and heart beat rhythm. Moreover thyroid gland also controls the growth and development of human body.
Thyroid gland suffers from many physiological disorders like:
- Goiter or expansion of thyroid gland
- Hypothyroidism or when the gland is incapable of producing sufficient hormones
- Hyperthyroidism or when the gland is over active in producing hormones
- Cancerous growth in thyroid glands
- Thyroid nodules or swellings in the gland
- Thyroiditis or puffiness or inflammation of the gland
Thyroid is caused by over secretion or under secretion of hormones from the gland. In both the cases; the chemical composition and balance of the human body is disturbed. Various biological disorders related to thyroid are caused due to different reasons like;
- Inflammatory disorder
- Effect of medicines
- Inborn illness
- Pituitary Malfunctions
- Deficiency of Iodine
Many people naturally develop, inflammatory issues known as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. The root cause for such swelling known as autoimmune disease is production of antibodies within the body that conflicts with the own tissues and result in production of specific bacteria that causes the tenderness and sensitivity.
In order to control over secretion of hormones, the disease of Hypothyroidism is treated with anti-thyroid medicines or radioactive iodine doses. It is medically proven, that these medications in turn causes permanent thyroid disease.
Effect of medicines
Many medicines of many other illness cause thyroid in the body such as lithium. Lithium is given to people with mental disorders but the same has a permanent effect on thyroid glands.
To cure cancer, radiation is inevitable. But this inevitable way of treatment can cause permanent hypothyroidism.
In many cases, children are born with no or immature thyroid gland. In both cases, since childhood, the child faces thyroid issues and his growth and development is affected.
During pregnancy, many women develop hypo or hyper thyroidism. This may lead to pre mature delivery or miscarriage or sudden rise of blood pressure during last trimester. Thyroid may also develop post-delivery; known as post-partum thyroid.
Very rarely a pituitary gland may fail to produce TSH or Thyroid Stimulating Hormone thereby causing disorders.
Deficiency of Iodine
Iodine is found in seafood, seaweed, iodised salt. Scarcity of iodine in body causes thyroid; as it reduces the production of TSH.
Indications and Symptoms
After even a small work, feeling tired, exhausted and lethargic is the primary symptom of thyroid. People suffering from thyroid do not feel like standing up and walking. They become this lazy! However extreme weight gain or weight loss is also indications of thyroid. Overall, one may look and feel old.
The other symptoms of thyroid are; increased sensitivity to cough and cold, constipation, dry skin, face and neck bulge, hoarseness, voice crack, muscle weakness, high cholesterol level, stiffness and aches in muscles and bones, slow heart rate, hair fall, short of memory and severe depression and mood swing. Acute hypothyroidism, medically called myxedema, is very rare but fatal. Indications and symptoms are low blood pressure, breathing difficulties, fall in body temperature, unfeelingness and even coma and prolonged senselessness.
Healing through Proper Lifestyle
One essential part of curing thyroid is proper diet and well balanced lifestyle. Control of food will essentially lead to cure of thyroid diseases.
- Controlled intake of iodine in optimum or prescribed quantity.

Thyroid healing through Yoga
Thyroid has limited medicines available. Once started, the medicine is for life long. The best and most optimum ‘nirvana’ is yoga and asanas. Thyroid is controlled if not cured by proper yoga mudra, asanas and meditation techniques. Yoga has no side effects like regular steroids.
The asanas and mudras will cure hypo and hyper thyroidism and will not cause any other disease out of it. Yoga helps to cure it in a natural and most effective way. However yoga will also cure and heal other body systems and result in overall wellbeing of the human body and soul. Since tension and anxiety are considered as one of the imperative reasons for thyroid disorders, regular meditation and chanting of ‘om’ for few minutes help to keep the mind and soul relaxed.
Yoga Nidra (Corpse Pose) is highly effective in both hypo and hyperthyroidism in cutting down anxiety and cooling down. For hyperthyroidism people may suffer from sleeping irregularities. Here yoga nidra can work wonders like a power nap during day time so that the body gets adequate peace while resting.
Asanas for Thyroid disorder
Different Asanas for Thyroid disorder are; Sarvangasana, Matsyasana, Hala Ugrasana, Dhanurasana, Ustharasana, Veerasana, Trikonasana, Simhasana and Bhunjangasana. Among these, Sarvangasana is most popular and effective in controlling thyroid as the asana helps to regulate blood circulation of the body and ejecting out deposited secretions.
Matsyasana, Ustharasana and Bhunjangasana are postures like bending the back which stimulates the thyroid gland optimally. Shirsasana regulates pituitary gland and results in active secretion of TRH and TSH. Bhramri pranayama also helps in accurate functioning of thyroid gland.
Mudra and Bandha for Thyroid
The yoga mudra for remedial purpose of thyroid are viaprita karani mudra, simha mudra, yoga mudra, jalandhara and uddiyana bandha. Viaprita karani mudra helps in flexible blood flow which helps in proper functioning of pituitary and thyroid gland in producing hormones for body metabolism. The Bandhas results in pranic flow towards the throat.
Following the Ling Mudra and Pran Mudra is very essential in curing thyroid disorders. By joining the tips of ring finger and little finger with the tip of the thumb, this PRAN MUDRA is created which supports in enhancing body vitality. Ling mudra helps in stabilising body thermal condition.
